Catalogue of the exhibition ‘La emoción del espacio’, which was curated by María Toral and took place from 9 October 2020 to 13 June 2021 at the Centro Niemeyer in Avilés. Its central theme is based on part of the Fundación Azcona sculpture collection. More than fifty works are shown, spanning a period of 118 years, starting with “Head of a Slave”, a piece by Auguste Rodin from 1898, and later providing context for the birth of the Avant Garde in sculpture. Artists like Picasso and Julio González took the lead in innovation, giving rise to movements such as Surrealism and Dadaism. And Miró and Man Ray, Chirino, Chillida, Oteiza and his abstract sculpture, and the “Menina” by Equipo Crónica would bring us to the second half of the century along with other important figures like Carmen Laffón and Antonio López. This extensive journey through time gives visitors an overview of the evolution of art in the 20th century.
